Amity Nuclear Security Education, Training and Research Facility

Amity Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (AINST) Amity University Uttar Pradesh established a centre of excellence in collaboration with Texas A & M University under the financial support from Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), US. The Facility was inaugurated on the 18th of April 2023 by Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri (Defence Minister, Government of India) in the august presence of Dr Ashok K Chauhan, Founder President Amity Global Education and Research Establishments. This facility was given a name “Amity Nuclear Security Education, Training and Research Facility (ANSETRF)” under the patronage of Texas A & M University (TAMU), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Défense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), US.

  • These RIIDs are generally used by first responders to search radioisotope sources at public places.
  • A radioactive source, if kept in a room out of sight, then it can be searched for with the help of RIIDs
  • Like wise someone is smuggling radioactive source in a vehicle, RIIDs can detect it.
  • Building search can also lead to the lookout for hidden radioactive sources.
  • Training in nuclear security can be conducted.
  • Back Pack detectors can be used to detect radiation in public places without creating any chaos.
  • Vehicle/Field exercise can be done by using these RIIDs

Nuclear Security Education Laboratory

The lab is equipped with detectors for alpha, beta, and gamma spectroscopic studies. Multiple sets of liquid nitrogen-cooled High-Purity Germanium Detectors (HPGe), scintillators spectrometers (NaI(Tl)) & CeBr3) and Silicon (Si) Surface Barrier Detectors are present. The HPGe detectors are known for their exceptional energy resolution and scintillators provide the best detection efficiencies. Both are complementary to each other, in identifying and quantifying gamma-ray emissions from various radioactive isotopes. Whereas alpha spectrometry is a precise and versatile technique that allows for the identification and quantification of alpha-emitting radionuclides.

Following are the areas where studies can be planned with this laboratory.

  • Train the security workforce with the advanced radiation detector
  • Nuclear security related experiments
  • To measure occupational exposure to alpha radiation
  • Measurement for compliance-related radiation safety standards.
  • Radiation dosimetry and radiation protection
  • Radiation monitoring and health Physics
  • Excellent detectors for environmental radioactivity.
  • Detection of radiological contamination and quantification.
  • Useful for shielding material characterization.
  • Nuclear medicine quality assurance measurements
  • Oil and gas exploration studies
  • Archaeology and geological exploration to determine the radioactivity inrocks.
  • In nuclear forensics, alpha spectrometry is used to analyze samples from nuclear incidents or suspicious materials to identify the presence of specific alpha-emitting radionuclides.
  • Radiometric dating /carbon dating
  • Alpha spectrometry plays a role in radiological emergency response by identifying and quantifying alpha-emitting contaminants.

Neutron Detection Laboratory, Remote Laboratory and Computational Laboratory

The remote laboratory at AINST, AUUP is being developed on lines of the Texas A&M University, Nuclear Security Science & Policy Initiative (NSSPI) Remote Laboratory Set Up shown below. The intent is to make the radiation detection and characterization laboratory to be made available to users from their home institution or location. The radioactive source and detector configurations are not easily available in every institution dealing with nuclear sciences and engineering courses. With this remotely available facility we can test/characterize different detectors with different radioactive sources and with varied shielding materials employed to test the efficacy of materials as shields.

The laboratory setup include:

  • The rotary table with four different materials of varying thicknesses and a Cs-137 source in the center. The attenuators and sources setup can be seen live with the webcam.
  • Linear actuator to verify inverse square law of variation of radiation intensity with GM counter/NaI Scintillator spectrometer.
  • A collimated NaI detector placed next to the rotary table.
  • An ethernet hub to connect the rotary table and linear actuator

This setup once ready can be used by different universities in India. We shall Allocate / reserve specific time slots for each set of students to use it. This is accessible online and at one time some specific experiments are only available. So prior intimation of the source detector configuration required would be helpful in the setup of the system.

Radiochemistry Laboratory

Radiochemistry is the chemistry of radioactive materials. Co-precipitation, solvent extraction and radio-chromatographic processes have acquired special importance in radiochemistry. The radiochemical laboratory performs analysis of samples with different levels of radioactivity (low- level to highly active) from nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities. It determines radionuclide inventories and vectors for waste characterization. An understanding of radiochemistry is crucial to understand and control the risks and benefits of radioactive materials. We provide opportunities to the students to get hands on experience with essential radiochemical concepts and techniques for applications in radionuclide detection and separations, environmental studies, nuclear waste management. Radiochemistry laboratory also enhanced research activity of AINST in the field of various environmental samples study. This wet chemistry laboratory is equipped with a radioactive materials capable fume hood for radiochemical use, and a suite of chemicals and laboratory materials for radiochemical applications.

COMPUTER CENTRE

The computing facility comprises of Intel Pentium processor based HP/IBM machines and servers. The entire network rests on four Firewall (Intranet, Mail, Attachment File & Print) HP and IBM servers. Students and faculty members alike can access the internet throughout the campus with the help of broadband radio link and ISDN link backup. A range of latest subject specific softwares are available to enable the students to work on data analysis, web technologies and also software designing. Efficient intranet facility enables smooth movement of data across departments.

LIBRARY

Library plays a very crucial role in supporting the very purpose of its existence, i.e., providing knowledge. Amity University Central Library is one of a kind. The aim of the Central Library is to develop it as a unique library for academics, researchers, faculty, staff and students of Amity University to access digital resource material as well as get books and information related to the curriculum taught in the University.
